The three-story building, housing social science classrooms, a new library, and a student services and social support center, was completed in the second semester of 2009. In late 2015, it was announced that a $26 million reconstruction project of the school's main building would begin the following year. Originally built in 1927 when the school was founded, the main building was described by local councilor Maggie Barry as a "stunning sight." The reconstruction of the main building was carried out concurrently with similar work on the school's science building, which was completed in mid-2016. The main building project, considered one of the most expensive construction projects in New Zealand history, was completed in 2020.

Takapuna Grammar School encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities during their free time, offering a wide range of options such as performing arts, dance, music, art, and sports. The school's jazz dance troupe has won awards in recent years in a performance competition with 135 participating schools.
